One of the first questions almost every mom asks me after booking her session is, “What are we supposed to wear for a Pittsburgh Maternity Photoshoot?”
And honestly…I get it.
Choosing an outfit for yourself is hard enough when you’re pregnant. Add a toddler with very strong opinions, a husband who’s asking, “Just tell me what to wear,” and trying to make everyone coordinate without looking too matchy, and suddenly it feels overwhelming.
The good news? It doesn’t have to be.
One of my favorite parts of the planning process is helping families choose outfits that photograph beautifully while still feeling like them. If you’re wondering what to wear for a Pittsburgh photoshoot, these are the same tips I share with every one of my maternity clients.

Why What You Wear for a Pittsburgh Maternity Photoshoot Matters
What you wear really does make a difference…but probably not for the reasons you think.
Your outfits help tell the story of your session. They influence how your photos feel, whether that’s light and airy, warm and cozy, or a little moodier. Since my style leans bright, natural, and timeless, I usually recommend soft neutrals and lighter colors because they photograph beautifully and never really go out of style.
That doesn’t mean you have to wear something that doesn’t feel like you.
I always want my clients to look back at these photos years from now and still love what they chose to wear. Trends come and go, so I encourage moms to think beyond what’s popular today. If showing your belly feels completely like you, go for it! But if you’re unsure, a classic, flowy dress tends to create the timeless look that so many families love.
At the end of the day, the goal isn’t to wear the “perfect” outfit. It’s to wear something that helps you feel confident, beautiful, and comfortable.

How to Coordinate Outfits for a Pittsburgh Maternity Photoshoot
One of the biggest misconceptions is that everyone needs to match.
They don’t.
In fact, coordinated outfits almost always photograph better than matching outfits.
When everyone wears the exact same plaid shirt or white shirt with jeans, your photos can end up looking flat. Instead, I recommend choosing two or three colors that work well together and mixing different shades, textures, and subtle patterns.
Think of your family’s outfits as pieces of the same puzzle instead of identical copies of each other.
One simple guideline I always give my clients is to avoid putting more than two people in the same color or print. That little bit of variety adds depth to your photos while keeping everything feeling cohesive.
The focus should always be on your family—not your clothes.

Planning What to Wear for Your Pittsburgh Maternity Photoshoot
This is honestly one of my favorite parts of planning a session.
You don’t have to spend hours scrolling Pinterest trying to figure out what everyone should wear. That’s what I’m here for.
Every family who books with me receives both a Style Guide and a Client Experience Guide. Inside are real outfit examples, clickable shopping links, color palettes, and inspiration to make planning as easy as possible.
Here’s how we put everything together.
Start with Mom
Mom always comes first.
Once you’ve found a dress that makes you feel beautiful and comfortable, everything else becomes much easier.
Whether it’s something from your own closet, something you purchase, or eventually something from my client closet, your outfit becomes the foundation for everyone else’s.
Next, Dress the Kids
If Mom is wearing a solid-colored dress, I love adding a subtle print or floral pattern for little girls that pulls in one of the coordinating colors.
If Mom is wearing a patterned dress, then I usually keep everyone else in solids so the outfits don’t compete with one another.
For little boys, I almost always recommend a collared shirt or polo paired with neutral pants or khakis. It’s classic, comfortable, and photographs beautifully.
Dad Comes Last
Dad is usually the easiest.
A pair of jeans or neutral pants with a button-down or dress shirt in one of your coordinating colors ties everything together without stealing the spotlight.
Most dads appreciate having someone simply tell them what works—and I’m always happy to help.

The Best Outfit Style for a Pittsburgh Maternity Photoshoot
One thing I tell my clients all the time…
Don’t be afraid to dress up a little.
Flowy dresses photograph beautifully outdoors and instantly give your images that timeless feel. They add movement, elegance, and softness that you just don’t get from everyday clothes.
But if dresses aren’t your thing, don’t force it.
I want you to feel like yourself because confidence will always photograph better than an outfit you don’t feel comfortable wearing.

Outfit Help for Your Pittsburgh Maternity Photoshoot
I’m so excited about this because it’s something I’ve wanted to offer for a long time.
I’m currently building a maternity client closet filled with beautiful dresses that my clients can borrow for their sessions.
My goal is simple—I want preparing for your session to feel easy.
If you don’t want to buy a dress you’ll only wear once, you won’t have to. You’ll have beautiful options waiting for you.
It’s still growing, but I can’t wait to continue adding pieces that photograph beautifully and help moms feel amazing.
Of course, if you’ve already found the perfect dress, I love that too. I simply want you to have options.

What It Really Comes Down To
At the end of the day, I don’t want you worrying about whether everyone’s outfits match.
I want you soaking in this season with your family.
That’s why I spend so much time helping my clients prepare before their session. From choosing your dress to helping Dad and the kids coordinate, I’ll walk you through every step.
You don’t have to figure it out on your own.
You just have to show up.
