How to Prepare For Your In-Home Newborn Photoshoot in Pittsburgh (Without a Full Deep Clean)
If you’ve been putting off booking a newborn session because your house “isn’t ready,” I want you to take a breath. I want to let you know what you need to do and what you don’t need to do for your in-home newborn photoshoot in Pittsburgh. You don’t need a freshly painted nursery, a spotless living room, or a home that looks like it belongs in a magazine. What you need is your baby, your family, and a little bit of light – and honestly, I can help with the light part too.
What Actually Happens When I Walk Through Your Door for your in-home newborn photoshoot in Pittsburgh
I’ll be honest with you. I’ve walked into homes that were small, dark, and full of stuff – and those sessions turned out beautifully.
I remember one newborn session where I walked in and there was clutter everywhere. The space was small and very dark. For just a moment, I wasn’t sure where we’d even start. But I took a look around, asked if I could move a few things out of the way, opened all the windows to bring in as much natural light as possible, and found one good spot where the light landed just right. I also had my off-camera flash with me, so when we needed a little extra, I used it. Those photos ended up being genuinely great.
That session taught me something I carry into every home session now: the space doesn’t have to be perfect. It just has to have a family in it that loves each other.

What Families Worry About when it comes to in-home Newborn Photoshoot in Pittsburgh(and What I Wish They’d Focus On Instead)
Almost every family asks me some version of the same questions before a in-home newborn photoshoot: “Is our house too small?” “It’s kind of messy – is that okay?” “We don’t have great lighting – will that be a problem?”
And every time, my answer is the same: none of that matters as much as you think it does.
Here’s why. I bring a light with me, so a dark house is not a problem. We don’t need a lot of space – a couch, a bed, or a nursery corner is genuinely enough. And as for the mess? I either move the clutter out of the frame before we shoot, or I position your family in a spot where it simply isn’t visible.
What I actually want you to focus on is your new baby. The way your toddler looks at their new sibling for the first time. The way your partner holds you both. Those are the moments that will matter twenty years from now – not whether the laundry basket was visible in the background.

What Actually Helps: Simple Home Prep That Makes a Real Difference
Since I know families still want to feel prepared, here is what genuinely makes my job easier – and your photos better.
Clear the Small Surfaces
The one thing that does make a noticeable difference is clearing off your small surfaces before I arrive. Specifically:
- Nightstands – these are almost always in the frame during bedroom or nursery shots
- Coffee tables – we often use the living room, so a clear surface keeps things looking clean
- End tables – same idea; small objects scattered across these are the hardest things to edit out in post-processing
I can move things around and I will, but if those surfaces are already clear when I arrive, it saves time and gives us more flexibility to just focus on you and your baby.
Move Cords If You Can
Cords on the floor or trailing down walls are small details that pull focus in a photo. If you can tuck them behind furniture or move them before I arrive, that helps. If you forget, don’t worry – we’ll work around it.
Open Your Curtains and Blinds
Natural light is always my first choice. Even if your home feels dark, opening every window before I arrive gives us a starting point. I’ll assess the light when I get there and supplement with my off-camera flash if we need it.
That’s Really It
Your home doesn’t need to be spotless. It doesn’t need to be staged. It doesn’t need to be big or bright or beautifully decorated. I put you in the spots that work, I move what needs moving, and I find the light – wherever it is.

Why This Matters More Than Getting the House Right
Here’s what I’ve seen over and over again during in-home newborn photoshoots in Pittsburgh: the families who spend the least energy stressing about their home end up the most present during the session. And presence is everything when it comes to these photos.
Your home is the backdrop of your actual life. The slightly worn couch, the toddler’s toys in the corner, the nursery that’s still being set up – that’s real. That’s your story. And your story is worth documenting exactly as it is.
I started this business because I was a new mom myself who wished she had more meaningful photos from those early days. I know how fast it goes. I know how quickly the newborn stage becomes a memory. And I know that years from now, you won’t look at those photos and think about whether the nightstand was clear. You’ll look at your baby’s face, your partner’s expression, and the way your family looked in that specific, fleeting season of life.
That’s what I’m here to capture.
