You know the #1 thing I hear from clients during their session?

“How did you get them to sleep like that? They never sleep like that for me!”

And honestly… I get it.

As a Wexford, PA newborn photographer, I hear this all the time. After photographing newborns over the past few years—and having two babies of my own—I’ve learned that newborn sleep can feel completely unpredictable.

But here’s something I always tell my clients:

Your baby does NOT need to sleep perfectly your entire session to get beautiful photos.

That said… a sleepy baby definitely makes things a little easier. So if you’re wondering how I help create those calm, snuggly moments during my sessions as a Wexford, PA newborn photographer, here are a few of my go-to newborn sleep tips.

1. White Noise

This one is a game changer.

White noise helps mimic the constant sound babies hear in the womb, which is incredibly soothing for them.

For my sessions as a Wexford, PA newborn photographer, I usually use a simple white noise app on my phone, but you can easily grab a sound machine for under $20.

At in-home sessions, I don’t always need it—babies tend to feel more relaxed in their own space. But in the studio, it’s almost always on.

If you’re not sure where to start, just stick with a basic white noise setting. It works for most babies.

Fun fact: my kids are 8 and 4, and they still sleep with white noise every night.

2. A Full Belly = A Sleepy Baby

This one might feel obvious… but it matters so much.

I always recommend feeding your baby right before your session starts—and we take breaks anytime they need a little top-off.

A full belly is one of the easiest ways to help your newborn settle into a deeper, longer stretch of sleep.

And yes—you can absolutely use this trick at home, too.

3. Swaddling Makes a Huge Difference

If you’ve looked through my work as a Wexford, PA newborn photographer, you’ve probably noticed a lot of cozy, wrapped-up babies.

That’s because most newborns love being swaddled.

It helps them feel secure and prevents those little startle reflexes from waking them up.

Now, not every baby loves it (my son definitely didn’t), but most do.

If your baby is fighting sleep, it might be worth trying a different swaddle style. The wraps I use are longer and stretchier than typical store-bought blankets, which helps get that snug, secure feel.

You can also try:

  • Traditional swaddle blankets
  • Velcro swaddles for ease
  • Stretchy jersey knit wraps (check with your pediatrician first)

4. Keep It Warm (Within Reason)

I’ll be honest—I do not love being hot.

But for newborns? Totally worth it.

Babies are used to a very warm environment, so keeping the room cozy helps them stay relaxed and sleepy.

In my studio, I keep things warm on purpose. If you’re at home and your baby is having trouble settling, try slightly adjusting the temperature.

Just don’t overdo it—especially if they’re swaddled.

5. Dim the Lights

Some babies can sleep anywhere… but a darker space definitely helps.

Lowering the lights or using blackout curtains can make a big difference in helping your baby stay asleep longer.

(All three of my kids have blackout curtains—and I swear by them.)

6. And Finally… Give Yourself Some Grace

This part matters just as much as all the tips above.

Newborns are unpredictable.

Just when you think you’ve figured things out, everything changes—growth spurts, preferences, routines… it’s a lot.

So if things don’t go perfectly?

That’s normal.

You’re learning your baby, and your baby is learning the world.

Even if this isn’t your first baby, every experience is different.

So take a breath, do the best you can, and rest when you’re able (yes… easier said than done).
