Pregnancy is beautiful, but let’s be honest — it can also be a lot. That is why a prenatal message in Pittsburgh could be a wonderful benefit.
The sore hips. The swollen ankles. The back pain. The feeling of needing to pee every 14 seconds. The weird sleep positions. The constant question of, “Is this normal?”
As a Pittsburgh maternity photographer, I spend a lot of time with expecting moms, and one thing I hear over and over again is how much their bodies are changing, and how badly they need a little relief.
So I sat down with a prenatal massage therapist to talk all about massage therapy in Pittsburgh, what prenatal massage actually is, how it helps, and why it’s so much more than just a “treat yourself” moment. I interviewed Joan at Rekindled Spirits in Aspinwall and she provided so much good information about prenatal messages.

What Is Prenatal Massage Therapy in Pittsburgh?
Prenatal massage is massage therapy specifically designed for pregnant women.
The biggest difference between a regular massage and a prenatal massage is that the therapist is caring for two systems — mom and baby. Because of that, prenatal massage is usually done with gentle to medium pressure instead of deep, intense pressure.
And yes, I know. When your back hurts during pregnancy, sometimes you want someone to dig into that spot like they’re excavating a fossil.
But prenatal massage has to be done carefully.
A trained prenatal massage therapist understands how pregnancy affects circulation, swelling, positioning, pressure points, and comfort.
The Benefits of Prenatal Massage During Pregnancy
Prenatal massage can help with so many of the uncomfortable parts of pregnancy, including:
- Back pain
- Hip pain
- Shoulder tension
- Swollen ankles
- Fluid retention
- Stress and anxiety
- Trouble relaxing
- General body discomfort
One technique the therapist mentioned is manual lymphatic drainage, which is a gentle way to help move extra fluid through the body. This can be especially helpful for moms dealing with swelling in their legs, feet, or ankles.
And honestly? Sometimes the biggest benefit is that you get an hour where no one needs anything from you.
No worrying about snacks, laundry, or answering a million questions. You just get some quiet time for yourself.
Why Specialized Prenatal Massage Therapy in Pittsburgh Equipment Matters
One of my favorite parts of our conversation was learning about the special cushion system this therapist uses.
Many pregnant women miss being able to lie on their stomach, especially later in pregnancy. This specialized prenatal massage cushion allows moms to safely lie face down while supporting the belly, breasts, ankles, and body.
She explained that the cushion system can be adjusted depending on how far along mom is, the size of the belly, and what feels most comfortable.
For a lot of moms, being able to lie face down again feels like magic.
After spending part of the session face down, she usually transitions clients to a supported face-up position with pillows or a wedge to keep them comfortable and safe.

Is Prenatal Massage Safe?
In most cases, yes — but it’s important to choose someone who is properly trained in prenatal massage.
The therapist emphasized that expecting moms should always check with their care team first, especially if they have a high-risk pregnancy or medical conditions like preeclampsia, significant swelling, or other complications.
A qualified prenatal massage therapist should understand:
- Pregnancy-safe positioning
- Proper pressure levels
- Contraindications
- Swelling and circulation concerns
- Pressure points to avoid
- How massage needs change throughout pregnancy
In Pennsylvania, massage therapists are licensed, but prenatal-specific training is still important. She recommended asking what kind of prenatal education or continuing education a therapist has completed.
Pressure Points During Pregnancy
This was one of the most interesting things we talked about.
There are certain pressure points that trained professionals are cautious with during pregnancy because they may be connected to encouraging labor. These include areas around the hands, feet, ankles, and shoulders.
The biggest takeaway?
Prenatal massage should not be aggressive.
You do not need intense pressure for it to be effective. Gentle, intentional work can still bring a lot of relief.

How to Prepare for Your First Prenatal Massage
Good news: you really don’t need to do much.
The therapist’s advice was simple:
- Wear comfortable clothing
- Drink water afterward
- Wear stable shoes, especially if your feet are swollen
- Don’t stress about shaving your legs
- Know that bathroom breaks are completely normal
And yes, she specifically said she does not care if your legs are shaved. So please release yourself from that very unnecessary pregnancy guilt.
What Products Are Used During Prenatal Massage?
When it comes to oils and products, simple is best.
The therapist prefers gentle options like organic olive oil, coconut oil, or grapeseed oil. She avoids heavy scents, strong essential oils, candles, and products that could irritate mom or baby.
Pregnancy can make you extra sensitive to smells, ingredients, and textures, so keeping things simple is usually the safest and most comfortable option.
What About Postpartum Massage?
I loved this part of the conversation because postpartum moms need care too.
The therapist shared that postpartum massage can help with recovery, fluid retention, muscle tension, and overall relaxation after birth. But many moms never book one because they are overwhelmed, busy, or feel guilty taking time for themselves.
And isn’t that the most mom thing ever?
You grow a whole baby, give birth, feed the baby, hold the baby, change the baby, worry about the baby… and then somehow feel guilty taking one hour for yourself.
A postpartum massage package would make such a thoughtful baby shower gift. Not another tiny outfit the baby may wear once. Actual care for the mom who just did the hardest thing ever.
Why Prenatal Massage Is More Than Pampering
The most beautiful part of our conversation was hearing the therapist talk about watching babies grow up after massaging their moms during pregnancy.
She shared how meaningful it is to be part of that season…helping moms feel more comfortable, more relaxed, and more cared for before their babies arrive.
And that really stuck with me.
Because whether it’s prenatal massage, maternity photography, or postpartum support, it all comes back to the same thing:
Moms deserve to be cared for too.
