5 Ways to Prepare for Your Photo Session | Pittsburgh Family Photo

Let’s be honest — getting ready for a photo session with kids in tow (and possibly a baby bump too) can feel like a lot. But as a Pittsburgh Family Photographer, I will help you every step of the way!

The outfits. The timing. The energy it takes just to get everyone out the door for your Pittsburgh Family Photo without losing your mind. That’s why finding a PGH Family Photographer who understands the challenges can make all the difference.

If that sounds like you, you’re not alone — and you’re exactly who I had in mind when I designed my family and maternity sessions.

As a Pittsburgh family photographer, I work with moms all the time who want beautiful, meaningful photos without all the stress. I know how much heart and effort goes into showing up for your family, so here’s a little guide to take the pressure off and help you feel calm, confident, and actually excited about your session involving a Pittsburgh family photo.

1. Start with how you want to feel during your family photo session in Pittsburgh.

Most people focus first on outfits — but let’s back up. How do you want to feel when you look back at these photos? Glowing? Relaxed? Close and connected to your loved ones as photographed by a PGH Family Photographer?

Let that be your starting point. Everything else — from what you wear to where we shoot — can be shaped around creating that feeling.

2. Styling: Keep it soft, simple, and true to you

Pastels, neutrals, and soft tones always photograph beautifully. And you don’t have to figure it out alone — I’ll help guide you through outfit choices that work well together without being matchy. After you fill out a short styling questionnaire, I’ll send you a personalized style board with links so you can either shop or use what you already have.

Whether you’re dressing a bump, a toddler, or a whole crew, capturing Pittsburgh family photos, as your photographer, I have got you covered.

3. Let the kids be themselves (really)

You do not need perfectly behaved kids to get beautiful photos. In fact, some of my favorite images come from those unplanned, in-between moments — a giggle, a snuggle, a silly face.

You don’t need to prep them with speeches or bribes. Just let them know we’re going to play, snuggle, and take some pictures. I’ll take care of the rest. However, I have found that bribes do work wonders especially if you offer a mini marshmallow or fruit snack. Letting kids be themselves lets me capture those Pittsburgh family photo moments authentically.

4. Give yourself time — and a little grace as a family photographer in Pittsburgh, I get how little time we have but give yourself a few extra minutes.

The best sessions start with space to breathe. Try to give yourself extra time to get ready so you’re not rushing out the door. That calm energy sets the tone for the whole session.

And if it’s one of those moments and nothing goes as planned? You’re still doing amazing. You showed up, and that matters more than anything else. Those chaotic bits are Pittsburgh family photo worthy, trust me, you will cherish them later.

5. You don’t have to know what to do

Most of my clients say some version of this: “We’re awkward in front of the camera.”
But here’s the thing, you’re not. You just need someone to guide you gently and clearly, which is exactly what I do every step of the way.

I’ll tell you where to stand, what to do with your hands, and how to interact naturally, so you can relax, feel confident, and just enjoy your people. I strive to make the Pittsburgh family photo experience seamless and enjoyable.

Final Thoughts from Your Pittsburgh Family Photographer:

You don’t need perfect outfits, perfect weather, or perfect behavior.
You just need to show up, love on your people, and let me handle the rest.

If you’re ready to finally get those meaningful, connected photos you’ve been dreaming of — I’d love to be your PGH Family Photographer.
